The Avalanche was Chevrolet’s entry in the emerging full-sized Sport Utility Truck category, which also included GM’s Cadillac Escalade EXT as well as Ford’s Explorer Sport Trac and Lincoln Blackwood/Mark LT, Honda’s Ridgeline, and others. The category essentially saw the full-sized cabin of an SUV mated with a short truck bed. This design allows the vehicles to serve double duty in hauling passengers comfortably while also managing a small to medium-sized payload. Many models were positioned as luxury cars.
The 4-door Avalanche, which saw production for model years 2001 through 2013, was based on GM’s Suburban/Escalade platform. A second generation was introduced for the 2007 model year, with updates to the powertrain, transmission, body design, and trim lines. The model was discontinued after 2013, despite a very vocal fanbase. Chevy has hinted it may resurrect the model, though it may be under a different name.
