GMC was born in 1909 when General Motors purchased Rapid Motor Vehicle Company to form it's truck division. The GMC brand has since manufactured trucks, pick-ups, vans, SUVs and military and commercial vehicles for General Motors. In case where there is a cross over between GMC and Chevrolet (pick-up trucks for example, the GMC and Chevrolet models are almost identical, with only badges and trim distinguishing the two makes.
Although GMC makes commercial vehicles like buses, delivery trucks and Dump trucks, the closest they've come to manufacturing a car is the Sprint and Caballero of the early '70s. These were rebadged versions of the Chevrolet El Camino and combined a car like cab with a small pick-up box. Although Chevrolet trucks are sold at Chevrolet dealerships only, the GMC versions are often available at Buick, Cadillac and Pontiac dealers, since these companies don't produce a full truck line.
