The DeLorean DMC-12 was originally manufactured and produced from 1981-1982. When reading about DeLorean cars, it is no surprise that the most prominent location for the DeLorean in popular culture was in reference to being a time machine in the "Back to the Future" films. It featured gullwing doors with a fiberglass underbody.
Roughly 9,000 DMC-12s were produced before production was stopped. Current estimates assume that roughly 6,500 of the original 9,000 are still in existence today. When the original idea about DeLorean was introduced to popular culture, celebrities including Sammy Davis Jr. and Johnny Carson invested in the company.
Special editions of the DMC-12 have been produced in history. Six DeLoreans were needed for the "Back to the Future filming" and only three are still in existence. Universal Studios owns two and the last has been restored extensively and is housed in a private collection. The car, complete with DeLorean car covers, is set to be returned to limited production with an electric model available by 2013.
